How eBay fees work in the UK
eBay charges a final value fee (FVF) calculated as a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays — the item price plus postage — when your item sells. For most categories that's around 10% for business sellers, though it varies (some categories are higher or lower). On top of the percentage there's a fixed fee of about £0.30 per order.
Since 2024, private sellers in the UK no longer pay seller fees on most categories — eBay shifted those costs to buyers via a Buyer Protection fee. If you sell as a private individual, set the selling fee to 0 in the calculator. If you sell as a business, the final value fee still applies.
Payment processing used to be a separate line (managed payments / PayPal), but eBay now rolls it into the final value fee, so you don't add it twice.
Why the sold price is never what you keep
A £40 sale doesn't mean £40 in your pocket. After a 10% FVF and a £0.30 order fee you'd receive roughly £35.70 — and that's before you subtract what the item cost you, the postage label, and packaging. Resellers who price off the sold figure alone consistently overestimate profit.
Add your item cost and postage to the calculator and it returns your true net profit, your margin (profit as a share of the sale), and your ROI (profit as a share of what you spent). Those last two are what tell you whether a sourcing decision was actually worth it.
